Steve Vai's latest album, "Real Illusions: Reflections" is scheduled for a 22 Feb 2005 release. Four years in the making, the album was recorded in Vai's Mothership studio in L.A. It features eleven highly anticipated tracks by Vai. The album is the first volume of a three part “concept trilogy” featuring the legendary guitar virtuoso in fine form. The concept disc is said to be "roughly 50% instrumental and 50% vocal."

Steve Vai handles the vocals, and plays six and seven string electric and acoustic guitars, as well as a Roland guitar synth. Supporting him on bass is Billy Sheehan and Jereme Colton on drums. Vai also employs an arsensal of effects some of which he designed.

Described by Schecter’s Marc LaCorte as a “retro-ized version of our standard Ultra model,” the new ULTRA III features the ‘looks’ of a 60's pawnshop prize, but with modern features.

The C1 Exotic is based on the popular Schecter CS-1 Custom Shop model. The C-1 Exotic features an arched mahogany body with a thick solid Flamed Maple top and will be available in two hand applied oil finishes; Antique Black Stain and Natural. ANAHEIM, CA (January 20, 2005) Â ESP Guitars is introducing 14 new guitar and bass models at the 2005 Winter NAMM Show, according to company president Matt Masciandaro. The new models range from new signature models from top artists to special models commemorating the companyÂs 30th anniversary.

"We're very proud of our new 2005 models," says Masciandaro. ÂThe last few years have seen record growth for ESP, along with our LTD and X-Tone brands. We feel our 2005 line represents our finest, most diverse collection of guitars and basses in ESPÂs history.Â

Five new Signature Series models top ESPÂs new offerings. The Truckster (SEE RELATED RELEASE) is the fifth signature model guitar from Metallica frontman James Hetfield. Available under both the ESP and LTD brands, the Truckster is a high-performance single-cutaway guitar that features a unique aged primer gray finish with custom distress patterns designed by Hetfield. The Axxion (pronounced ÂActionÂ) is one of two new ESP Signature Series models from Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine (SEE RELATED RELEASE). Designed for rock, the AxxionÂs menacing axe-like shape is accentuated with black hardware on its all-black finish. The Axxion will also be available as both an ESP and LTD model. Mustaine has also lent his name to another new guitar for LTD, the affordable DV-200. Based on the popular DV-8 model introduced last year, the DV-200 offers a similar V body style in a bolt-on maple neck and basswood body design.

ESPÂs 30th anniversary is being commemorated with four special models, only to be produced during the 2005 calendar year. The EC-2005, F-2005, and Viper-2005 guitars, and B-2005 bass, are all high-end representations of ESPÂs popular models that feature custom inlays and graphics derived from the companyÂs distinctive conjoined winged serpents 30th anniversary logo.

ESP is also premiering a new addition to their X-Tone Series semi-acoustic guitars. The PA-1 Thinline Acoustic Electric offers a mahogany body with maple top; a 3-piece mahogany neck; a rosewood fingerboard; pearl block inlays; a B-Band Transducer pickup system with active preamp controls; volume, treble & bass controls; chrome hardware; Grover tuners; a rosewood acoustic bridge; and triple layer creme binding on the body, neck and headstock.

Four more new LTD models are being premiered at NAMM. The AX Series has been expanded with three new guitars: the AX-400, AX-250 and AX-50. While each model offers the highly stylized AX body shape, the AX-400 and AX-250 also include a tribal fingerboard inlay pattern. The AX-400 also features a set-through neck construction and EMG 81 pickups. Finally, the Viper-407 takes the companyÂs hugely-popular double-cutaway model and makes it available in a 7-string version. The mahogany-bodied guitar offers an Earvana compensated nut as standard equipment, as well as white binding on the black satin neck and headstock.

Kustom Announces New Coupe Amps At NAMM 2005

CINCINNATI, OHIO. JANUARY 20, 2005 -Tapping into the classic look of its colorful 1960s and 70s-era instrument amplifiers, Kustom® now redefines the term Tuck n Roll for a new generation of players with the introduction of its road-ready Coupe Series guitar amplifiers. The all-tube models, which are made in America using U.S. and imported parts, offer a fresh take on Kustoms patented visual aesthetics while cranking out a variety of ballsy tube amp tones.

Kustom introduces two models at Winter NAMM: the 36 Coupe and the 72 Coupe. Noted amp guru James Brown, Kustoms chief engineer, designed both models with the engineering team at Kustoms Cincinnati headquarters. The new Coupes utilize 12AX7 preamp and 6L6 power tube platforms and are rated at 36 and 72 watts respectively. Both amps have two channels, each with a Volume control with pull-Bright function plus a Master Volume, allowing users to dial in everything from sparkling clean runs to stinging blues licks and fat, roaring rock sounds.

The Coupe tube amps use a partially self-biased power amp design that allows the power tubes to subsidize a secondary fixed-bias scheme, said Brown. The result is an amplifier with the best of both worlds: self-biased reliability with the increase power of a fixed-bias design. Our decision to build in the United States with U.S. and imported parts allows us to utilize advantages from our current mass manufacturing processes while keeping the bulk of the handcrafted cabinetry, final assembly and quality assurance done locally in Cincinnati, Ohio. Using this method, were able to build amps with boutique amp quality at production amp prices.

The Coupes EQ section provides Bass, Middle and Treble controls. Both models feature an Accutronics spring reverb unit with Intensity and Tone controls, a nod to the old school Kustom amps. The higher-powered 72 Coupe also provides Kustoms original Tremolo and Vibrato effects with Tremolo, Speed, and Vibrato controls. Channel-switching, effects and Master Volume Boost are all accessible using the Coupes complimentary footswitch.

Drawing further on its heritage, Kustom teamed up with U.S. speaker manufacturer Eminence® to produce an all-new line of speakers for the Coupe Series. The result is the KEI (Kustom-Eminence Integrated) guitar speaker, a modern interpretation of a vintage design featuring an aluminum dustcap. According to Brown, this exclusive design gives players a taste of the original vintage speakers unique tonal properties which were great for cleaner tones, while successfully handling more modern, higher gain sounds as well. The new KEI Turbo12 speakers are used in both the 36 Coupe (one 12-inch) and 72 Coupe (two 12-inch) models.

Visually, the Coupe Series plays off the classic Kustom Tuck n Roll car upholstery vibe, but this time featuring the sparkly padded material on an integrated panel that runs along the amps upper, horizontal front edge. Each handcrafted cabinet is built using 100 percent Baltic Birch and features a vintage suitcase-style handle, premium tolex covering, Plexiglas control panel and authentic recreations of Kustoms distinctive control knobs.

The whole idea of the Coupe tube series was to take elements of the original Kustom products and include modern details that weve all become accustomed to, like channel switching, higher gain, effects loop and high-quality, double-sided printed circuit boards so every amp sounds the same. It was a lot of fun creating something new using the original Kustom designs, while being able to incorporate some fresh new ideas in the process, said Brown.

Were excited to offer players an all-tube guitar amp that taps into Kustoms heritage as one of Americas original rock n roll amplifiers, said Mark Hunter, Kustoms marketing manager. The RC-20XL has the same “hands-free” pedal operation as the original RC-20. Record, Play, and Overdub can be done with the left pedal, all the while your hands are free to play your instruments. The RC-20XL gives you 16 minutes of recording time to capture and store loops or one-shot phrases (three times that of the RC-20), and you can work your way backward thanks to the new Undo function, a necessity when making mistakes during overdub.

Performance Tools
The RC-20XL has 11 memory tracks, in which you have the choice of storing either one-shot phrases or loop phrases. During your performance, you can switch between the tracks with an optional FS-6 Dual Footswitch, or two FS-5U footswitches (momentary-type). The Undo function can be a useful and musical function for erasing your previous phrase and instantly layering a new one.

The RC-20XL offers three stop options when you hit the pedal:
1) immediately stop the playback
2) let the phrase play until the end
3) fade it out.

I just bought the Nov 2004 issue of Guitar World today. I've been getting into Slipknot's music lately after a friend of mine was playing one of their CD's. There is an ad on page 5 for Ibanez Guitars which has a picture of Mick Thompson of Slipknot holding a new Signature guitar with the word SEVEN spelled out on the first five frets. What happened to the Mick 7 HATE Warlock he did with B.C. Rich guitars?
